‘We lost it all’: Puerto Rico medical marijuana businesses assess hurricane damage

By Bart Schaneman

Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico’s medical marijuana industry, setting back its development at least six months – if not much longer – and causing millions of dollars in damage to MMJ businesses.

No outdoor marijuana cultivation facilities survived, but some dispensaries are operating and patients who can access them are still buying.

When the hurricane made landfall Sept. 20, winds reached speeds of up to 200 mph accompanied by heavy rain that caused flash flooding. The natural disaster is estimated to have killed at least 36 and cost the U.S. territory $100 billion.

It also wreaked havoc on Puerto Rico’s fledgling MMJ

California wildfires could adversely affect legal marijuana crops

Wildfires raging in Northern California could have a serious impact on the state’s legal outdoor marijuana harvest, much of which would supply the January launch of recreational cannabis sales.

Across a number of “cultivation websites,” the East Bay Express reported Monday, marijuana growers are already saying that fires in 14 counties are leaving their cannabis reeking of smoke, thereby undercutting the crop’s market value and making it more vulnerable to contaminants.

If outdoor marijuana grows are exposed to wildfire smoke and ash, it could pose a health risk, such as lung infections, to cannabis consumers.

Arkansas accountants cleared to do work for medical marijuana firms

Accountants in Arkansas have been given the green light to provide professional services to medical marijuana businesses, making Arkansas one of the few states where accountancy regulators have given clear guidance on the industry.

The Arkansas State Board of Public Accountancy (ASBPA) has received 5-10 inquiries from accountants wondering if they’re allowed to provide professional services to medical marijuana businesses, Little Rock TV station KFSM reported.

The ASBPA concluded that accountants who provide professional services to licensed Arkansas MMJ businesses will not be perceived as lacking “good moral character” and the service provided won’t be “considered an

Dutch government eyes regulated cannabis production

The Netherlands’ new cabinet plans to sanction experiments that would change the country’s model of where and how legal cannabis is sold.

According to RTL News, up to 10 municipalities may be chosen for the test program, which could lead to state-licensed growers producing marijuana for sale in their own region.

Proponents of the move say it will help to keep the country’s famed “coffee shops” from purchasing cannabis supplies from the black market, the broadcaster reported.

Parts of the Netherlands, particularly Amsterdam, have long allowed the sale of small amounts of cannabis in coffee shops.

But under

As marijuana consumption licenses stall, some entrepreneurs see opportunity

More than three months after setting rules for the nation’s first licensed marijuana consumption clubs, Denver has yet to receive any applications.

And that stalemate has officials in other states and jurisdictions holding off on licensing consumption clubs or lounges.

Denver officials are brushing off complaints that the rules for setting up public consumption lounges are too burdensome, even as social-use activists mull a lawsuit.

Despite all that, a few cannabis entrepreneurs are hoping the apparent standstill gives them an opportunity to be the first in Denver to open for business.

“The cannabis industry has a long history of having

By Matt Lamers

One year ahead of adult-use legalization, Ontario has become the hub of Canada’s production, finance and ancillary cannabis industries.

Large licensed producers dominate the province’s marijuana sector. Opportunities for entrepreneurs will be less widespread, but are expected to be available in ancillary businesses such as security, greenhouse supplies and accounting.
