Investors Not Exactly Stoked About New York’s MMJ Market

Companies spent millions of dollars combined trying to win one of New York’s five coveted medical marijuana business licenses, but investors aren’t exactly bullish on the market’s potential now that permits have been awarded.

Many institutional investors are concerned with state limits on the MMJ industry in New York, expressing concerns that each licensed company can only have four dispensaries statewide (for a grand total of 20 storefronts) and that the qualifying medical conditions list is relatively short.

“We believe it’s going to be an extremely limited market,” the CEO of Invest in Cannabis told

Difficult Market Conditions Lead to Medical Marijuana Price Hike in Minnesota

By John Schroyer

With less than a month of sales under its belt, one of Minnesota’s two licensed medical marijuana companies is adjusting its business model to cope with unexpected challenges.

Minnesota Medical Solutions, also known as MinnMed, recently announced that it is raising prices across the board at its dispensaries by an average of 15-20%. The company also said it might delay opening its other two dispensaries until the climate improves.

The move shows how difficult it can be for businesses to predict demand and set prices in a new market – especially one as unique

Business Wins Approval to Open Boston Dispensary

A company that holds medical cannabis business licenses in several states received a tentative green light from zoning board officials to open the first dispensary in Boston despite resistance from locals.

Patriot Care Corp. initially had trouble getting officials to sign off on the dispensary after members of a downtown business group voted to oppose the dispensary, calling it a “step in the wrong direction” for the neighborhood.

A recent poll also found that almost 60% of nearby residents are against the business’s location, as are local law enforcement officials.

Maryland MMJ Clinic Generating Controversy

A Maryland clinic offering consulting services to prospective medical cannabis patients more than a year before the state’s MMJ program takes effect is drawing mixed reviews from industry and state officials.

Greenway Consultation – which provides information and guidance but doesn’t actually sell marijuana – opened its doors in June and has already seen more than 100 patients. It has a total of three consultants and three physicians, though none are registered with the state’s Medical Cannabis Commission to recommend MMJ to patients.

Latest Setback For Marijuana Banking Underscores Importance of Federal Change

By Tony C. Dreibus

The cannabis industry has experienced a handful of high-profile banking setbacks this year, deflating hopes that marijuana companies, state lawmakers and financial institutions will be able to come up with workable solutions anytime soon.

The last roadblock came last month, when the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City denied a Colorado credit union a master account.

The account would have allowed the financial institution – The Fourth Corner Credit Union – to conduct electronic transactions and process checks and credit and debit cards. Without that account, the credit union can’t move forward.
