Detroit Approves Ordinance to License Dispensaries

Detroit’s medical marijuana industry received a big boost Tuesday with the passage of an ordinance that allows the city to license marijuana dispensaries.

The 6-1 vote gives Detroit the power to establish licensing guidelines, inspection requirements, a fee schedule and penalties – in essence helping to legitimize the scores of unregulated dispensaries that currently exist in the city.

Under the ordinance, all dispensaries will have to obtain a license from the city or shut down. While some – or perhaps many – existing dispensaries won’t be able to meet the regulations and will therefore have to close, the

First Illinois Dispensary Opens…Without Cannabis

The first Illinois medical cannabis dispensary opened on Tuesday in the small town of Marion, which is closer to Kentucky than to Chicago.

There’s a big caveat, however: The dispensary is only offering counseling, massage and acupuncture services at this time. It’s not selling medical cannabis yet because none is available at this time, according to an Illinois TV station.

For now, the dispensary – called Harbory – will focus on building relationships with local patients and hosting educational seminars on the uses of MMJ, as well as instructing potential customers on how to register for the state’s

PA Lawmakers Recommend Non-Smokable MMJ, 14 Conditions

A committee tasked with drawing up recommendations for legalizing medical cannabis in Pennsylvania is proposing a program that would ban smokable marijuana and edibles but include several qualifying medical conditions that could lead to big patient numbers.

The proposal means the state could follow in the footsteps of Minnesota and New York, which both also bar smokable MMJ in favor of pills, oils and extracts. Although New York’s MMJ program is not yet up and running, Minnesota’s is off to a rough start, with only about 500 patients having registered so far.

Uncertainty in the Heartland: Ohio Marijuana Legalization Still a Big Question Mark

By John Schroyer

The group behind an effort to legalize marijuana in Ohio next month has definitely succeeded in one area so far: generating a lot of attention for its measure.

But whether ResponsibleOhio’s controversial proposal will win the hearts and minds of voters next month is still a big unknown, as there’s a surprising lack of insight into whether the measure has much support among locals.

There haven’t been any recent polls about the initiative – called Issue 3 – specifically, and Ohio political experts remain skeptical that the group will be able to persuade enough voters to check

MMJ Delivery App Challenges Los Angeles Law

The company behind a popular medical marijuana delivery app that was ordered to cease operating in Los Angeles last December is challenging the city’s MMJ restrictions.

Nestdrop has asked an appeals court to overturn the injunction that prevents it from doing business in Los Angeles, saying that the previous ruling is incorrect because the city’s medical cannabis law doesn’t “explicitly” ban delivery services or apps that help dispensaries facilitate deliveries.

The company is essentially claiming that the city’s reading of Proposition D, the set of MMJ industry rules approved in 2013 by voters, is incorrect. The appeal also argues that Prop

Chart of the Week: Women Holding More Seats in the Executive Suite at Cannabis Companies

Wet T-shirt contests at medical marijuana events. Magazine ads featuring half-naked women posing provocatively with buds and bongs. Requests that female job candidates send in photos with their resumes.

The cannabis industry hasn’t been very welcoming to women in the past, which is one reason for the historical dearth of females working at marijuana companies.

But that appears to be changing quickly.

Case in point: Women now make up a sizable – and growing – portion of the executive ranks in the marijuana industry, including 63% of high-level positions at testing labs and nearly 50% of such roles at infused products and

California Gov. Approves MMJ Regs

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed three bills Friday that will establish statewide regulations on medical marijuana businesses, bringing the nation’s largest MMJ market in line with most of the industry and putting to rest concerns over whether he supports such a system.

The trio of bills were, quite literally, passed at the eleventh hour last month by the state legislature, which had tried and failed for several years running to set up a regulatory system for the MMJ industry.

“This sends a clear and certain signal to our federal counterparts that California is implementing robust controls not only

Poll: Solid Support for Legal Marijuana in 3 Swing States

A new poll released by Quinnipiac University found that support remains strong for legalizing medical cannabis in three critical swing states in next year’s presidential election.

The results could bode well for marijuana legalization efforts in each of those states – Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

In Florida, where medical marijuana legalization is expected to be on the general election ballot in 2016, MMJ support is at 87% among registered voters. Support for recreational cannabis legalization hovers around 51%, with 45% opposed.

In Pennsylvania, where state lawmakers have been trying to legalize MMJ for months now, support for
