Hendrix Family Member Ramps Up Cannabis Business

Purple Haze Properties, a company run by the younger brother of rock legend Jimi Hendrix, is increasing its presence in the cannabis industry with several new products.

The company revealed on Monday a trio of deals designed to capitalize on Hendrix’s ongoing fame, including packages of pre-rolled joints, a line of disposable cannabis vaporizers and new Zippo lighters featuring Hendrix’s name and likeness.

The deals are all separate – with different manufacturers and distributors – and build on Purple Haze Properties’ recent entry into California’s medical cannabis industry with Jimi’s Medicated Macaroons, according to LA Biz.

Denver will extend a moratorium on new players in the city’s recreational cannabis industry until May – rather than another two years as initially proposed – to study the issue further before deciding whether to implement a longer ban.

The current moratorium that only allows existing medical marijuana businesses to get into the recreational cannabis industry is set to expire on Jan.1.

The city council had been considering extending the moratorium for another two years, but this week officials announced that they would walk that back to a four-month ban, according to the Denver Post.

CannLabs Closes Colorado Lab, Lays Off Employees

CannLabs, one of the most prominent marijuana testing labs in the country, has closed its Colorado facility and laid off 15 employees, citing financial problems and issues surrounding the termination of former CEO Genifer Murray.

That leaves the publicly traded company with testing labs in Connecticut and Nevada, according to the Denver Post, as well as the StrainData database, a consulting wing of the business, and CannLabs’ intellectual property.

CannLabs’ Colorado laboratory was “no longer operating profitably,” a spokesman told the Post, in part because it’s been waiting on certification from the state to begin microbial
