Alaska Tightens Residency Requirements for MJ Licenses

Alaska has tightened residency restrictions on recreational marijuana business owners again after loosening them last month.

Now, anyone seeking a rec business license must be a full-time resident of Alaska who has lived there for at least one year and either works or goes to school in the state, according to the Associated Press.

Those were the initial requirements the Alaska Marijuana Control Board came up with earlier this year.

But at a Nov. 20 meeting, the board changed regulations to require potential business owners be eligible to vote in Alaska – which only requires a physical address. In other words,

Illegal Dispensaries a Vexing Question as Canada Seeks to Establish Rec Marijuana System

By Omar Sacirbey

The six-week-old government of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is considering what type of regulatory system to establish for recreational marijuana, which the country’s new leader promised to legalize.

And a handful of observers believe

MPP Expert Quits, Cites Industry Takeover of Legalization Movement

The lines between the cannabis industry and activism have been blurred, and perhaps even extinguished.

That’s the reason Dan Riffle gave for quitting the Marijuana Policy Project, one of the largest and most influential cannabis activism groups in the country.

According to the International Business Times, Riffle, the former federal policy director for MPP, emailed some of his co-workers before he left, saying the “industry is taking over the legalization movement and I’m not interested in the industry.”

As the Times noted, MPP also last month established a new political campaign “funded by marijuana industry revenues.”

Massachusetts MJ Legalization Campaigns Face Deadline

The two competing campaigns in Massachusetts trying to get recreational marijuana legalization measures in front of voters next November face a Wednesday deadline to submit signatures.

The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, which is backed by the Marijuana Policy Project, announced Tuesday it would submit more than 103,000 signatures – well over the 64,750 needed to qualify for the ballot.

A spokesman for the competing group, Bay State Repeal, said in a recent interview that he was “cautiously optimistic” his organization would meet the signature requirement.

Massachusetts election officials will have to ensure the signatures are valid. In many cases,

State in India Legalizes Hemp Cultivation

In yet another sign that the cannabis reform movement is not just confined to the United States, the state of Uttarakhand in northern India has announced that it will allow local farmers to begin growing hemp, as long as they only sell it to the government for industrial purposes.

That means it won’t be anywhere close to the medicinal uses of cannabis in the U.S. or Canada, and regular marijuana is still prohibited. The farmers also must regulate their hemp so the THC content is only between 0.3% and 1.5%, according to the International Business Times.
