MMJ Patient Boom in Nevada

Some good news for Nevada’s medical cannabis businesses: the number of MMJ patients in the state may more than quadruple in coming years, according to a state health official.

Nevada is receiving about 300 medical marijuana card applications per month. If that pace keeps up, the number of registered patients will increase from the current number of about 14,000, to 60,000, a deputy administrator of the state Division of Public and Behavioral Health told the state’s Legislative Interim Finance Committee this week, the Las Vegas Sun reported.

Through Feb. 10, there were 18 dispensaries that had received their

Colorado Marijuana Pesticide Lawsuit Dismissed

A lawsuit that could have turned into a landmark marijuana legal case has been tossed by a district court judge in Colorado.

Cannabis retail chain LivWell Enlightened Health was sued last October by a pair of former customers who alleged that the company used controversial pesticides – including Eagle 20 – during the cultivation process.

But this past week, Denver District Court Judge Eric Eliff dismissed the suit after ruling that the two plaintiffs had failed to demonstrate any “cognizable injury.”

“Plaintiffs sole state injury is that they overpaid for (LivWell’s) product,” Eliff wrote in his ruling. “There

Week in Review: Marijuana Tax Proposal in CA, Potential New Competition in NY + Cannabis Ad Relief?

By Omar Sacirbey and John Schroyer

California lawmakers consider implementing new taxes on medical cannabis sales, New York MMJ businesses could see more competition in the near future, and a federal bill seeks to open up cannabis advertising.

Here’s a closer look at several notable developments in the marijuana industry over the past week.

A Taxing Situation

It’s not often that businesses welcome new taxes.

But in California, some dispensaries and cannabis-related professionals are giving the thumbs up to a bill introduced Wednesday that would impose a 15% tax on MMJ as part of the state’s move to regulate its MMJ

FDA Warns Eight CBD Producers to Quit Making Medical Claims

A year ago, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned six companies to stop making claims about the medicinal benefits of their CBD-based products. Earlier this month, it formally warned another eight.

“Your products are not generally recognized as safe and effective for the above referenced uses,” the FDA wrote to Texas-based Garden Green Gold, referring to several claims on the company’s website about how CBD could help treat everything from schizophrenia to post-traumatic stress disorder.

“Failure to promptly correct these violations may result in legal action,” the letters warned the companies.

DEA Searches Oregon Extract Maker

In a reminder that cannabis businesses are still not immune from federal law enforcement – even in states with legal marijuana – U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents recently searched the homes of the owners of a THC extractor and seller in Oregon, according to Willamette Week.

DEA agents searched the homes of Michael Andrew Dillon and Michael Corby, the owners of True North Extracts, on Dec. 23, after local police shut down True North’s oil-extraction facility in Wood Village, asserting their warehouse broke building and fire codes.

Founded in 2014, True North had produced more than 50 pounds

Australia Set to Legalize MMJ Nationwide

Australia could become the latest country to fully legalize cannabis for medical purposes, and it could happen as soon as the end of next month.

A bill introduced in the Australian Parliament on Wednesday would establish a “national licensing and permit scheme to supply medical cannabis to patients… on clinical trials,” according to Reuters.

What’s not immediately clear is exactly how the cannabis would be dispensed, or if there would be many business opportunities for would-be Australian dispensary owners. It’s possible MMJ could be distributed via pharmacies, since the government has indicated it will strictly be for scientific

Social Media Massacre: Marijuana Businesses Scrambling as Facebook, Instagram Shutter Accounts

By John Schroyer

The marijuana industry is facing a growing challenge on the social media front, and there’s no resolution in sight.

Both Facebook and Instagram are closing marijuana-related business accounts without warning and seemingly at random, cutting off key connections companies have with their customers.

And the two social media giants are not just targeting retailers and businesses that touch the plant: Companies that provide services to the industry and those that focus on marijuana consumers have been caught up in the crackdown, too.

All told, at least 100 marijuana companies have been affected over the past month –
