Arkansas AG Approves MMJ Measure for Signature Gathering

Arkansas could join a number of other states this year with new marijuana business opportunities, if backers can get a possible medical cannabis ballot initiative past voters.

Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge approved on Wednesday the language and format of a proposed constitutional amendment that would legalize medical marijuana in the state. Supporters will now have to collect about 85,000 signatures to make the November ballot.

Rutledge had rejected the five previous MMJ proposals submitted to her, asserting in each case that their titles were too ambiguous. Earlier this month, Rutledge rejected a proposal that backers dubbed

Scalia’s Death Could Scuttle Anti-Rec Lawsuit

Former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s untimely death this past Saturday could have a major impact on the legal cannabis market: It’s now possible that the nation’s high court could end up split 4-4 on whether or not to consider an interstate lawsuit that aims to overturn Colorado’s landmark recreational cannabis law.

The remaining justices will weigh this Friday whether or not they even want to take up the case; it requires at least four justices’ support to do so. If the court goes forward with the suit, which was brought by the attorneys general of Oklahoma and

CalCann Holdings Hopes to Bring Credibility to Southern California’s MMJ Industry

By Omar Sacirbey

Southern California’s medical cannabis industry is one of the largest in the country, but it’s also one of the most chaotic and controversial given the proliferation of unregulated, unscrupulous dispensaries in the Los Angeles area.

CalCann Holdings hopes to change that.

The company is looking to help build the region up into a reputable hub for the marijuana industry by running above-board dispensaries and grows in areas that require MMJ businesses to obtain local licenses.

Led by general counsel Aaron Herzberg and chief operating officer Chris Francy, who founded the company about 18 months ago, CalCann made its biggest splash

WA to Withhold Safety-Related Info on MJ Shops

The Washington State Legislature approved a pair of bills this week that would exempt certain financial information, money-carrier routes, security plans and camera locations for marijuana businesses from the state’s public disclosure laws, according to the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin.

“That type of information, in the wrong hands, can definitely be detrimental,” Jim Mullen, who owns two dispensaries in Vancouver, told the Bainbridge Review. “It’s like having the blueprints to a bank.”

Currently, almost all information provided by marijuana businesses to the state can be obtained by a public records request.

The Senate and House bills are not identical,

CO Industry Group Announces New Edibles Standards

One of Colorado’s several cannabis industry groups announced on Wednesday that its members would adhere to a new standard for edibles production and sales in an effort to make them less attractive to kids: no candies in the shape of animals or humans.

The Colorado Cannabis Chamber of Commerce, which counts among its members high-profile companies such as Cheeba Chews, Medically Correct and EdiPure, pledged not only that its edible producing members would abide by the standard, but also that its retail members would not purchase or sell such candies.

Arizona Chamber of Commerce Fighting Legalization

Arizona marijuana advocates who believe that opponents to their legalization efforts won’t put up a fight better think again.

The Arizona Chamber of Commerce and two prominent prohibitionist lawyers in the state are putting on a March 2 workshop on how to defeat proposed legalization ballot measures, according to the Phoenix New Times. One measure is by the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, which is backed by the Marijuana Policy Project, and the other is from Arizonans for Mindful Regulation. Both groups are still collecting signatures to get their measures on the November ballot.

Billionaire Puts $1M Behind CA Rec Initiative

The question over whether or not billionaire Sean Parker, of Facebook fame, would help fund a push to legalize recreational marijuana in California has been put to rest. He recently contributed a second helping of $500,000, bringing his total commitment to $1 million, according to SF Weekly.

The Adult Use of Marijuana Act, also known informally as “the Parker initiative” because Parker may wind up being the driving financial force behind the campaign, now has amassed $2.25 million total for the electoral cycle. That probably won’t be enough in the long run to get the measure passed, however,

Oregon Dispensaries See Huge Revenue Spike From Rec Sales, But Picture Not All Rosy

By John Schroyer

Recreational cannabis sales began in Oregon last October, and things have been looking up for many of the state’s dispensaries since then – to the tune of tens of millions of dollars in additional revenues.

So far, more than 300 licensed medical marijuana dispensaries have received special permission from the state to sell adult-use cannabis, a temporary solution until Oregon issues licenses specifically for its recreational marijuana program. The first licensed rec stores are expected to open this fall.

The decision to start early sales in Oregon has been a boon for some

Ohio MMJ Ballot Measure Details Emerging

Although no official ballot language has yet been drafted for a measure to legalize medical cannabis in Ohio this fall, the main group behind the effort has revealed a few key details about it’s plans for the initiative.

Rob Kampia – head of the Marijuana Policy Project – stressed that the measure will not create an oligopoly the way last year’s failed measure would have.

He also said the Ohio initiative “won’t impose large taxes or bureaucratic hurdles,” according to Cleveland.com. That will almost certainly translate into lower prices than some other states in the Midwest and eastern U.S.
