Canadian MMJ Producer Planning Enormous Grow

One of Canada’s 35 licensed medical marijuana producers has big plans for the future – plans the size of 10 football fields.

That’s how big an automated greenhouse in Alberta will be once Vancouver-based Aurora Cannabis is finished building it out, the Calgary Sun reported. The grow will be roughly 600,000 square feet, with the capacity to produce more than 154,000 pounds of MMJ.

The facility is slated to be up and running in the summer of 2018, and could become the largest such operation in the country – although competitor Aphria Inc. recently bought a parcel

Canada Calling Cannabis Entrepreneur Whoopi Goldberg

Comedian Whoopi Goldberg is eyeing Canada as a potential market for her cannabis-infused menstrual pain products, underscoring marijuana entrepreneurs’ interest in the county’s market ahead of the federal government’s plans to legalize adult-use MJ.

Whoopi & Maya, as Goldberg’s cannabis products are known, is currently available only in California. But Goldberg said in an interview this week she would like to make the therapy available to Canadian women, according to the Canadian Press.

Part of Canada’s attraction as a market, Goldberg suggested, is that medical marijuana already is legal at the federal level – although only a limited number

Michigan Rec Campaign Loses Court Fight, May Not Make Ballot

Michigan residents may not get the opportunity to vote on legalizing recreational cannabis in November after a local judge rejected a pro-marijuana campaign’s effort to place an adult-use initiative on the statewide ballot.

Michigan Court of Claims Judge Stephen Borrello ruled on Tuesday the MILegalize campaign broke the rules by collecting signatures outside a traditional 180-day window, and therefore did not qualify for the November ballot, the Detroit News reported.

Borrello cited a 1986 Michigan state Supreme Court ruling that upheld the 180-day window, meaning that MILegalize’s chances at the state’s highest court may be slim.

Oklahoma MMJ Camp Gathered Just Enough Signatures

Oklahoma could become the ninth state to vote on some form of cannabis legalization in November after the secretary of state ruled on Tuesday that a pro-medical marijuana campaign had submitted enough valid signatures to make the fall ballot.

The initiative, Question 788, faces a few more hurdles, however. The Oklahoma Supreme Court must approve the measure, and then the state’s attorney general would review the initiative’s title. After that, members of the public would be allowed to challenge either the signatures or the title, according to broadcaster KFOR.

Big Changes in Store for L.A. Medical Cannabis Industry

By John Schroyer

Big changes are on the way for Los Angeles’ sprawling medical marijuana industry, which faces few regulations and has a sizeable black market.

City lawmakers are expected to place a measure on the local ballot next year to reform existing rules and create a new regulatory framework for the MMJ industry.

Any regulatory changes also could govern recreational cannabis, if California voters approve adult-use marijuana in November.

Nothing is set in stone. And the Los Angeles City Council could act unilaterally to set up a regulatory system – without asking voters.

But industry observers predict

Oregon Rec Marijuana Sales Pass $100M Mark Through July

Oregon’s recreational marijuana sales have passed the $100 million mark, and that’s just between January and the end of July.

Although rec sales began at medical dispensaries last October, the state didn’t begin taxing those sales until January, at 25%. The 2016 sales figures for the first seven months are in line with the $180 million-$220 million in retail sales the Marijuana Business Factbook 2016 projects for the entire year.

The total sales figure at the end of July is an estimated $102 million, according to the Oregonian.

Ohio Commits Money to Implement Medical Marijuana Program

A bipartisan Ohio budget panel voted unanimously to release some $1.8 million to implement the state’s new medical marijuana program, delivering funds to regulators that will oversee the new industry.

The Ohio Department of Commerce and the state’s pharmacy board – the two agencies in charge of licensing MMJ firms – requested the money. Ohio’s medical cannabis law didn’t include provision for funding MMJ regulatory agencies, the Toledo Blade reported.

The commerce department, which will license growers, processors and testing laboratories, requested $923,000. The department will use the money for hiring five additional staffers, training, research, and a

NY Health Dept. Recommends Doubling MMJ Program

The New York State Health Department is recommending that the number of medical marijuana businesses in the state be doubled and that the MMJ program offer a wider range of authorized health providers.

The recommendations are among several contained in a new report issued by the department, “Medical Use of Marijuana Under the Compassionate Care Act.” The proposals are intended to improve patient access to MMJ.

New York’s MMJ program has gotten off to a slow start since its launch in January. In June, the Drug Policy Alliance issued a report saying patients and caregivers face significant

Uruguayan Cannabis Company Betting on Hemp

Uruguay made history nearly three years ago when it became the first modern country to legalize recreational marijuana at the federal level. But given how difficult the country’s industry rollout has been, at least one Uruguayan cannabis producer is shifting its sights to marijuana’s non-psychoactive cousin: hemp.

International Cannabis Corp., one of only two licensed marijuana producers in the country, aims to tap a global hemp market instead of just the Uruguayan marijuana market, in part because it’s far less regulated, Bloomberg reported.

PA’s Draft Medical Cannabis Rules a Good Start, Experts Say

By Omar Sacirbey

Pennsylvania has moved quickly to issue draft regulations governing its new medical marijuana program, a sign the state is keen to get the MMJ industry off on the right foot.

The proposed rules are detailed and offer marijuana entrepreneurs a road map of where the program is headed, experts said.

Among other things, the proposed regulations aim to promote racial diversity within the state’s emerging medical cannabis industry, and they mandate the use of natural pesticides in what is expected to become a major MMJ market.
