Arizona awards 31 new dispensary licenses

The Arizona Department of Health Services on Thursday announced the winners of 31 new medical cannabis licenses.

Sort of.

After holding a live-streamed lottery Thursday afternoon for nine of the 31 licenses, the agency posted a full list of the license winners’ application ID numbers online but did not identify any of the winners.

Officials did not immediately respond to a request Thursday for the names of the winners.

There are already 94 operating dispensaries in Arizona, along with another five that have received licenses but are not yet up and running. That brings the total of licensed

Denver marijuana packaging firm files for bankruptcy

High Supply, a Denver producer of child-resistant containers for marijuana products, has filed for bankruptcy protection, claiming the company’s “severe financial stress” was caused by “theft and corporate espionage by former employees.”

High Supply CEO Paul Lufkin is also suing a former co-owner and several formal employees, asserting they tried to launch another marijuana packaging firm in violation of a non-compete agreement, according to BusinessDen.com.

The case is the latest example of what is a growing trend: cannabis business partners falling out and then winding up on opposing sides in a courtroom. In July, for example, Bhang Chocolate

Certified seeds and CBD help U.S. hemp industry take root

By Omar Sacirbey.

America’s fledgling hemp industry recently got its latest boost when the Colorado Department of Agriculture created six varieties of certified domestic hemp seeds that U.S. farmers can buy to start their own crops.

The dearth of seeds plus their cost have been among the factors hindering the U.S. hemp industry’s expansion.

Hemp seeds can range in price from $25 a pound to a $1 per seed. Colorado, for its part, has spent years developing a certified seed that produces a crop with a THC level of no more 0.3%. Otherwise, the plant is considered marijuana and

Damian Marley partners to convert former CA prison to grow operation

The youngest son of late reggae star Bob Marley has joined with Ocean Grown Extracts to convert a former California state prison into a multimillion-dollar marijuana growing operation, a project that could spur other municipalities in the state to lure MJ businesses for their economic impact.

According to Billboard, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, also a reggae musician, sees turning the space into a grow operation as “poetic justice” for all the nonviolent criminals who were once incarcerated there.

“Many people sacrificed so much for the herb over the years who got locked up,” Marley, 38, told Billboard.

California rec campaign spending half its cash on ads

The campaign behind Proposition 64, which would legalize adult-use cannabis in California, has already committed nearly half its $14 million war chest to TV and radio ads across the state.

One such ad, according to the Los Angeles Times, focuses on provisions included in the legal language of the Adult Use of Marijuana Act (Prop 64’s formal title), including a prohibition on edibles and marketing that target children.

A second ad argues that tax revenue from legal recreational marijuana sales could hit $1 billion for California infrastructure, such as job-training and placement programs, as well as after-school programs

Alaska’s rec cannabis market just weeks from debut

By John Schroyer

The fourth recreational marijuana market in the United States is nearly here.

Alaska’s adult-use industry is just a few weeks from the first retail sales, according to estimates by multiple sources. The first rec shop, Frozen Budz, could open in Fairbanks before the end of the month.

The last hurdle is that local and state authorities must clear testing labs to open, so cultivators can have their crops checked for potency and microbial contaminants. After that, growers will be allowed to begin supplying retailers, the first of which are putting the finishing touches on their storefronts.
