MassRoots receives $1.1 million in new funding

Cannabis-centric social media site MassRoots received $1.1 million in funding on Friday, mostly from new investors, and disclosed it slashed the salaries of its top executives to cut costs.

MassRoots’ founder and CEO, Isaac Dietrich, led the latest funding round, with former MyPoints.com CEO Steve Markowitz also among the contributors. The announcement came as the company closed on $3.2 million in equity financing under an offering that was launched in August.

Dietrich said in a news release he expects the funds to make the Denver company “cash-flow positive” and allow it to scale up to reach a larger audience.

MD appoints new medical marijuana regulator

Maryland’s governor has appointed a new patient advocate to the state’s 16-member medical cannabis board.

The move comes amid criticism that Maryland’s Medical Cannabis Commission failed to consider racial diversity when it awarded its first batch of grower licenses in August, the Washington Post reported.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan appointed Saundra Washington, an African-American cancer survivor and director of a nonprofit that assists people in need.

The commission issued 15 cultivation licenses this summer, none to African-American companies. That triggered a lawsuit alleging the commission broke its own rules during the selection process.

The commission has since said it would

Chart: What’s in a cannabis company name? Not as much slang

By Eli McVey

The marijuana industry has been in a perpetual struggle to shake the “stoner” stereotype many hold of its consumers, and the businesses that comprise the industry are leading the charge against it.

The relatively minimal use of slang exemplifies the industry’s emergence from the black market into the mainstream, a push to ease the stigma surrounding
