Montana Legislature prepares to regulate MMJ, again

The Montana Legislature is gearing up for a new session of lawmaking, and on tap already are up to 10 bills related to the medical cannabis industry.

According to the Missoulian, the measures vary from an outright overturn of Initiative 182 – which Montana voters approved in the election earlier this month – to pro-cannabis bills that would restore access for MMJ patients.

By Omar Sacirbey

Privateer Holdings, a cannabis-focused private equity firm, plans to spend a significant chunk of the $122 million it has raised over the past year on expanding its international holdings and footprint through acquisitions, exports, additional hires and new ventures, CEO Brendan Kennedy said.

Earlier this month the Seattle firm – which owns three companies – completed a $40 million round of fundraising. It’s the first marijuana-centric investment company to raise more than $100 million, a sign that deep-pocketed investors increasingly  are warming up to the cannabis industry as more states legalize recreational and medical MJ.

Though these new markets will take time to develop, they present tremendous opportunities for entrepreneurs looking to capitalize on the results of the election.

California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada all passed ballot measures legalizing recreational marijuana on Nov. 8, while Arkansas, Florida and North Dakota legalized medical cannabis. Montana already had MMJ laws on the books, but voters passed an initiative to allow regulated medical marijuana businesses

Denver bars and many restaurants hoping to take advantage of a newly approved voter initiative to allow cannabis enthusiasts to imbibe on their premises will be out of luck, as officials moved to prevent the mixing of alcohol and cannabis.
