Private Washington state fund to boost medical cannabis access

Marijuana retailers in Washington state could see an uptick in business thanks to a proposed fund that would help foot the bill for low-income medical marijuana patients.

The idea is the brainchild of the 70-member Washington CannaBusiness Association (WACA), which hopes to have the fund up and running by spring 2017, according to the News Tribune. The fund is intended to expand patient access to MMJ.

Anyone will be able to contribute to the fund, WACA Executive Director Vicki Christophersen said Tuesday. The fund will be administered separately from her organization.

Once the program is in place, patients seeking

Texas bill would expand medical cannabis conditions list

A Texas lawmaker is pushing to expand the conditions list for medical marijuana in the state.

Sen. Jose Menendez on Tuesday filed a bill that would allow patients with chronic and debilitating ailments to receive medical cannabis recommendations from doctors, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Currently under the Texas Compassionate Use Program, residents can receive physicians’ recommendations for medical marijuana only if they suffer from epilepsy.

“Doctors, not politicians, should be determining what is best for Texas patients,” Menendez said about his bill, according to the Star-Telegram.

MA lawmakers mull delay in rec marijuana law rollout

Massachusetts State Senate President Stanley C. Rosenberg, a Democrat who favored adult-use legalization, confirmed that lawmakers are discussing a delay of in the rollout of the state’s recreational marijuana law that voters passed on Nov. 8.

He said all deadline dates were “on the table,” according to the Boston Globe. The reason? To give officials more time to craft regulations.

Some key dates include Dec. 15, when the new law says recreational cannabis can be legal to possess and consume for persons 21 years of age and older, and March 1, when the state treasurer is supposed to

Alaska adult-use cannabis market on track, despite supply hiccups

By John Schroyer

Alaska, the nation’s newest adult-use marijuana market, is slowly but steadily getting up and running, although many shops are running short on product because demand exceeds supply.

As of Nov. 29, 61 cannabis business licenses had been issued in the state, including 29 that are currently operational.

More businesses are expected to open soon, including growers, and that is expected to help ease the supply situation. Customer demand, meanwhile, has been brisk. That has meant many retailers – although not all – are for now struggling to meet demand.

Canadian prime minister seeks crackdown on illegal dispensaries

Though the Canadian government is on track to legalize recreational cannabis in 2017, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he’s frustrated with illegal medicinal marijuana storefronts and wants police to enforce the law.

Trudeau wants to put an end to dispensaries that say they are federally licensed but are not among the nation’s licensed producers, the Toronto Star reported Saturday. Many of these illegal storefronts have sprouted up in Canada, particularly in Toronto.

Medical cannabis currently is legal in Canada with a doctor’s prescription. But patients may obtain marijuana only by registered mail from the country’s 36 producers or by cultivating

Oregon eases cannabis testing rules, but is it enough?

Oregon regulators have eased marijuana testing rules that retailers and other industry professionals say held up supply, forced prices upward and drove some businesses to close.

But some industry professionals say the revised rules don’t address the main problem areas.

Among the changes outlined Friday in two pages of revised rules – which are temporary and valid through May 30, 2017 – the Oregon Health Authority said it would permit cannabis businesses to have larger and more varied sample sizes tested at one time, the Bend Bulletin reported. The OHA, which oversees marijuana analysis, made the
