Info on Nevada dispensary applicants exposed

A security researcher discovered this week that the personal information of more than 11,000 medical marijuana dispensary applicants in Nevada could be accessed online, a revelation that caused the state to shut down its online MMJ portal.

ZDNet first reported Wednesday that a bug in the state’s medical cannabis website allowed anyone with the right web address to access an applicant’s full name, home address, Social Security number, citizenship and physical details.

The news site said Justin Shafer, a security researcher, discovered the problem. It’s not clear if other people accessed the data.

Massachusetts delays start of recreational cannabis sales

Massachusetts lawmakers have decided to push back the opening of recreational marijuana stores by six months, dealing a blow to the state’s adult-use industry and raising concerns about the possibility of additional delays going forward.

Under a legalization measure approved by residents last month, the first rec shops in Massachusetts were slated to open in January 2018.

But a handful of House and Senate lawmakers who showed up for informal sessions Wednesday voted to postpone the industry’s launch until June 2018.

Legislators said the decision gives the state more time to work through the complex process of setting

Some Maryland companies engaging in MMJ scams

Scammers are trying to take advantage of Maryland’s new medical marijuana program by offering patients phony pre-approvals and bogus MMJ cards, which could create an air of mistrust around the state’s emerging cannabis industry.

Maryland has not yet given doctors the green light to begin recommending medical cannabis, and there is no such thing as a pre-approval for patients, a representative from the Maryland Cannabis Industry Association told the Baltimore Sun.

The state reportedly has already received some 20 inquiries regarding suspect claims from so-called cannabis businesses.

While doctors can now sign up to participate in the program, the patient

Deadline looms for Oregon dispensaries

The clock is ticking for Oregon medical cannabis dispensaries that want to continue selling to recreational customers.

On Jan. 1, all storefronts serving the adult-use market must have a recreational marijuana business license from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.

Oregon officially launched recreational sales last year by allowing existing dispensaries to sell cannabis to customers without a patient card until the state could get its adult-use program fully up and running.

Now that Oregon is licensing rec-specific businesses, dispensaries either have to obtain a new license or revert back to medical-only sales.

Alaska MJ business owners concerned over advertising rules

Business owners in Alaska’s newly formed recreational cannabis industry can add advertising to the list of issues they face.

Last fall, Alaska became the fourth U.S. state to roll out an adult-use marijuana program, and it quickly ran into supply problems.

Now marijuana business owners are attempting to wade through murky advertising rules to determine if what they’re doing complies with state and federal law.

According to the Alaska Dispatch News, the state’s Marijuana Control Board met recently to discuss advertising regulations and iron out just what constitutes an ad and how businesses are allowed to

Florida awards seventh CBD license

Florida will award a business permit under its CBD-focused program to a company that challenged the state’s initial licensing decisions after barely losing out to a competitor.

The development moves Florida closer to settling more than a dozen administrative challenges lodged by companies that didn’t win one of five licenses to grow and sell CBD-based medicine as part of a law passed in 2014.

It also could help alleviate some supply concerns as the state transitions to a new full-strength medical marijuana program.

Florida’s health department decided to grant a license to McRory’s Sunny Hill Nursery, with officials acknowledging that

Rhode Island estimate: $15M in tax revenue from MJ legalization

Rhode Island could net $10 million-$15 million in tax revenue during the first year of cannabis sales if it legalizes recreational marijuana, the states’s governor told the Providence Journal.

It’s the latest indication from Gov. Gina Raimondo that her administration is considering regulating and taxing adult-use cannabis. It’s also the first time an administration official has made a marijuana revenue forecast, the Providence Journal reported.

But Matt Sheaff, a spokesman for the state’s Department of Business Regulation, cautioned that Raimondo’s figure is a “back-of-the-napkin” forecast and does not mean legalization is imminent, according to the newspaper.

Portland, Oregon, approves marijuana delivery services

Hoping to attract smaller, new businesses to the local cannabis market, the City Council in Portland, Oregon, has approved an ordinance that creates a new class of license for delivery-only marijuana businesses.

These new marijuana delivery services would be prohibited from selling marijuana from storefront locations. They also could accept and deliver orders only during certain hours and would be prohibited from delivering beyond city limits, KATU News reported.
