San Diego DA ordered to return $100K to MMJ businessman, family

San Diego’s district attorney was ordered to return more than $100,000 to a medical marijuana pioneer and his family who had their assets seized more than a year ago after local law enforcement raided his MMJ distribution company but didn’t charge anyone with wrongdoing.

The ruling by a superior court judge against District Attorney Bonnie Dumani could have implications for the medical cannabis industry, which has been the target of civil asset-forfeiture cases. The election of Donald Trump has raised the specter of renewed crackdowns.

Canada: Producers must test medical cannabis for pesticides

Spurred by more incidents of pesticide-tainted medical marijuana, Health Canada is demanding that the country’s federally licensed MMJ producers test their products for unauthorized pesticides.

The federal agency, which oversees Canada’s MMJ industry, said plants from two producers – Peace Naturals in Ontario and Hydropothecary in Quebec – recently tested positive for myclobutanil.

Regulators said in a news release they soon will issue guidelines on how Canada’s licensed producers should conduct the tests and report results.

The national outlook for marijuana legislation, policy: Q&A with U.S. Rep Jared Polis

By John Schroyer

U.S. Rep. Jared Polis has been at the forefront of defending the marijuana industry in Congress. He co-founded the Congressional Cannabis Caucus and has sponsored multiple bills over the years to enact pro-cannabis reforms at the federal level.

One marijuana measure bearing his name may even get traction this year.

Marijuana Business Daily spoke with the Colorado Democrat a few days before Congress passed a temporary federal spending bill that includes a provision protecting the legal medical marijuana industry from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Nevada to allow ‘early’ recreational cannabis sales starting July 1

Medical marijuana dispensaries in Nevada will be able to start selling recreational cannabis as soon as July 1, a move that will provide a huge boost to the state’s MMJ industry and create tens of millions of dollars in sales this year.

On Monday, the Nevada Tax Commission approved a proposal that allows existing MMJ dispensaries in good standing with the state to begin sales this summer, about six months earlier than planned.

Most of the state’s 190 licensed medical cannabis dispensaries, cultivation sites and processing businesses are currently in good standing – defined as going at

The Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis said he believes the indictment is the first Oregon state prosecution of a licensed butane hash oil facility involved in an explosion, The Daily Astorian reported.

Marquis charged in his indictment that William “Chris” West and Jason Oei “unlawfully and recklessly, under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life,”

Florida lawmakers fail to strike deal on medical marijuana bill

Florida lawmakers failed to agree on compromise legislation to regulate the state’s medical marijuana program, handing off the job to health regulators – a situation that has MMJ advocates worried.

That’s because earlier this year Florida health regulators proposed a plan to give the state’s seven existing CBD-focused businesses entire control of the full-strength MMJ market.

Such a move would effectively close off the state’s MMJ industry to new growers and dispensary operators hoping to capitalize on a November voter initiative legalizing full-strength medical cannabis for a broad swath of patients.

The legislative session ended at midnight Friday

Pennsylvania may not allow medical cannabis firms to adopt highways

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has turned down a pro-marijuana group’s application to adopt a highway, possibly indicating that future medical cannabis licensees in the state will also be prohibited from advertising in the same way.

The agency told the Pennsylvania Cannabis Festival that it won’t be allowed to adopt a highway “because cannabis is illegal,” Pennlive.com reported. That was after two other initial reasons that the department gave, including that the festival supported adult-use marijuana and – initially – because it wasn’t a business (though it registered as a limited liability corporation).
