Company behind MJBizDaily in legal dispute with former exec

The parent company of Marijuana Business Daily is involved in a legal dispute with its former president and publisher over several employment-related issues, including those tied to his termination, compensation and noncompete agreement.

Rhode Island-based Anne Holland Ventures recently filed a lawsuit in Denver County District Court alleging that former executive George Jage violated the terms of his employment agreement after he unsuccessfully tried to buy the company.

According to the suit, Jage was terminated in April when he “repudiated his agreement to company policy including the written terms of the noncompete, non-solicitation and nondisclosure agreement.”

Nevada recreational marijuana sales to launch Saturday

Licensed Nevada medical marijuana dispensaries can start selling recreational cannabis as planned on Saturday despite an ongoing legal battle, state officials said.

Nevada intends to appeal a district judge’s order that only alcohol wholesalers can obtain cannabis distribution licenses, but that won’t affect the state’s plan to start retail sales, a Department of Taxation (DOT) spokeswoman said Monday.

The judge ruled in favor of the Independent Alcohol Distributors of Nevada, who filed suit to halt the issuance of distribution licenses. They argued that only licensed liquor wholesalers qualify for the marijuana distributor licenses.

Regulators, however, say they

Chart: Cannabis industry employs 165,000-plus workers

By Eli McVey

With 165,000-230,000 full- and part-time workers, the U.S. cannabis industry has quickly become a major job generator.

Cannabis-related businesses now employ more people than there are dental hygienists and bakers in the United States and will soon surpass the number of telemarketers and pharmacists.

The estimates – published in the newly released Marijuana Business Factbook 2017  – include employment data for retailers, wholesale grows, infused products/concentrates companies, testing labs and ancillary firms.

The job figures represent an impressive feat for an industry that has, for the most part, been operating legitimately only since 2009.
