Arkansas medical cannabis industry group forms

A former Arkansas attorney general and the chair of the medical board are part of a new group representing entities doing business in the state’s fledgling medical marijuana industry.

Ex-state AG Dustin McDaniel and Medical Board Chairman Dr. Steven Cathey are among the seven board members for the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Association announced Wednesday.

The association’s acting executive director is David Couch, who headed the campaign for the medical marijuana measure last year.

The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Association said in a news release it would be the “leading voice” for cultivators, distributors and businesses serving the medical marijuana industry.

Marijuana businesses in Clark County, Nevada – which includes Las Vegas – will have to be careful about how they promote their businesses or risk penalties or even a loss of licenses.

The director of the Department of Business Licenses in Clark County has told local marijuana companies that promoting public use of cannabis or getting involved with non-licensed MJ businesses could result in the suspension or loss of licenses.

In a letter to local marijuana firms, agency director Jacqueline Holloway said cannabis companies can’t publicize marijuana yoga and swimming events, nor parties and dinners, “even if

AG’s letter to Oregon governor highlights illicit marijuana sector

Following similar letters to two other governors, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions wrote to Oregon Gov. Kate Brown noting that her state’s legal marijuana businesses haven’t slowed the black-market marijuana market.

Sessions was responding to an April letter from Brown and the governors of Colorado, Washington state and Alaska that asked the Justice and Treasury departments to maintain the position on cannabis they held under the Obama administration, the Denver Post reported. The four governors’ states all have legal marijuana laws.

The letter to Brown were comparable to the ones he sent to

Medical marijuana companies in Canada capitalizing on ‘insane’ growth abroad

By Matt Lamers

Canadian medical marijuana companies are primed to tap what one industry executive calls “insane” growth overseas.

Flush with capital and bolstered by the federally legal status of MMJ in Canada, companies are spreading their wings overseas to gain a first-mover advantage in new markets as more countries legalize marijuana for medical use.

Hawaii’s first medical cannabis dispensary open for business

After 17 years of waiting, Hawaii dispensaries began selling medical marijuana Tuesday.

Maui Grown Therapies of Kahului conducted the Aloha State’s first MMJ sale at 11 a.m. HST after getting the go-ahead from the Hawaii Department of Health.

Hawaii was among the first states to legalize medical marijuana in 2000, but dispensaries weren’t legalized until 2015.

In April 2016, Maui Grown was awarded Hawaii’s first MMJ dispensary license and, in February 2017, received a notice to proceed with cultivation from the state. The dispensary passed its final retail inspection on Monday, setting the state for Tuesday’s opening.

DEA seeks to reduce federal marijuana quotas for research

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration wants to reduce the amount of marijuana and other drugs it plans to produce for research purposes.

The DEA’s goal is to decrease the amount of marijuana from 472,000 grams – about 1,040 pounds – it allotted in 2017 to 443,680 grams – about 978 pounds – for next year, according to the Denver Post.

The new quotas were released as part of the DEA’s newly proposed 2018 aggregate production quotas for substances listed on Schedules 1 and 2 of the Controlled Substances Act, which are the two most

National lawmakers group: Deschedule cannabis

The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) has approved a resolution urging the federal government to take marijuana off the list of scheduled drugs under the Controlled Substances Act.

The group said the Controlled Substances Act should be amended – with the removal of marijuana – to make it easier for banks to serve cannabis businesses.

The vast majority of the nation’s banks are afraid to serve marijuana businesses, fearing the federal government could revoke their banking licenses for working with companies that handle federally illegal substances.

Descheduling would also allow states to determine marijuana policies
