A recent memo from Nebraska’s top law-enforcement official – in which he called cannabidiol products “illegal” – has underscored the challenges faced by CBD manufacturers and retailers nationwide.

The memo, and a CBD brouhaha in Indiana, have meant lost sales, confiscated product, legal uncertainty – and even the loss of a job.

Michigan OKs vertically integrated medical cannabis companies

Details are starting to emerge about Michigan’s new medical marijuana licensing rules.

Michigan’s medical cannabis businesses will be allowed to grow, process and sell MMJ at the same location once a new statewide MMJ regulatory system is up and running, the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs said Thursday.

Potential medical cannabis licensees who want to run vertically integrated businesses under one roof must have separate working areas, entrances and record-keeping systems in place for each license, MLive.com reported.

Nevada to explore recreational marijuana, gambling convergence

Gov. Brian Sandoval has ordered Nevada’s gambling policy committee to recommend guidelines on issues where the state’s long-established gaming industry and nascent recreational marijuana industry intersect, including whether casino-resorts can host events that promote or cater to the cannabis industry.

The Nevada Gaming Policy Committee – which includes gambling regulators, casino representatives and other industry officials – must meet no later than Dec. 15 and make its recommendations by June 2018 under Sandoval’s mandate.

Sheriffs step up patrols of hemp farms after N.C. robberies

Hemp fields are getting extra protection from law enforcement in one eastern North Carolina county where the new crop has been targeted by thieves, a sign that growers of the plant face more threats than the usual pests and poor weather.

The extra sheriffs’ patrols in rural Edgecombe County, N.C., come after five men were accused this week of trying to steal hemp. They were charged with trespassing, the Rocky Mount Telegram reported.

Florida institutes new rules for medical cannabis licenses

Florida has already licensed 12 medical marijuana businesses, but the state health department has decided to adjust the regulations for additional businesses, seemingly a nod to the agency’s previous missteps.

Eight additional MMJ licenses are scheduled to be issued by Oct. 3, but these applicants will face a much different process than their predecessors, according to the News Service of Florida.

Under an “emergency rule” enacted Wednesday by the health department, the agency is outsourcing the application scoring to 16 “subject-matter experts” who have knowledge in various sectors of the cannabis industry, the news outlet reported.

Las Vegas tourists won’t be able to visit marijuana consumption clubs any time soon.

Commissioners in Nevada’s Clark County – home to Las Vegas – have decided to wait until Denver allows the nation’s first cannabis consumption club to open before they further discuss licensing and regulating marijuana lounges in Sin City.

Ohio to begin taking medical cannabis dispensary applications

Ohio regulators will soon be taking applications for the 60 medical marijuana dispensary licenses up for grabs in the state.

Prospective dispensary owners will have a two-week window – Nov. 3-Nov. 17 – to submit their applications, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

Each applicant will pay a $5,000 fee. License winners will fork out a $70,000 operating fee every other year to own one of the 60 dispensaries, which are expected to begin selling medical cannabis in September 2018.
