Florida will delay awarding five new medical cannabis licenses

Florida’s medical marijuana regulators will miss their deadline to award five more MMJ business licenses.

A statute passed in June required the state’s MMJ regulators to issue five new medical marijuana licenses by Aug. 3 and an additional five by Oct. 3.

The first five were awarded on time, but the others will be delayed for an undetermined period, Sunshine State News reported.

The head of Florida’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU) blamed the missed deadline on Hurricane Irma and a lawsuit filed by an African-American farmer, according to the news outlet.

Tilray exports medical cannabis to New Zealand for national dispersal

Tilray has started supplying medical marijuana to the New Zealand market for nationwide distribution, filling the nation’s cannabis supply shortfall two weeks after its government lifted restrictions on cannabidiol.

British Columbia-based Tilray’s medical marijuana will be available in pharmacies across New Zealand, the company said in a news release.

The Ministry of Health’s liberalized rules on cannabidiol went into effect Sept. 6, allowing medical practitioners to prescribe CBD products to patients. Previously, the ministry had to sign off on all cannabidiol requests.

Florida struggling to keep pace with MMJ patient registrations

Florida’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use is dealing with a major patient backlog which some stakeholders say is forcing patients to wait longer than the mandated 30 days to receive their MMJ cards.

According to WEAR TV and the Miami Herald, the state health department is being “flooded” with MMJ registration applications, up to 3,000 pending at any given time, with staffers receiving about 1,300 calls a day from prospective patients.

One physician who’s recommending MMJ for patients estimated that the wait time is up to about seven weeks instead of 30 days, WEAR TV reported.

Chart: Lots of patients, small purchases in Hawaii’s first month of medical marijuana sales

By Eli McVey

Medical cannabis sales in Hawaii officially began in August following several months of delays and setbacks.

While initial data suggests the state’s program is comparable to others on the mainland, a closer look reveals just how unique the market really is.

After opening on consecutive days, the state’s only two operational dispensaries – Maui Grown Therapies and Oahu’s Aloha Green – combined for an estimated $304,000 worth of sales over the program’s first month.

How does that compare to some other new markets that opened in recent years?

It’s extremely close to the estimated $284,000

Maine panel signs off on rewrite of recreational cannabis law

Maine’s recreational marijuana law underwent a rewrite by a legislative committee this week that could spell major changes for the program, including an increased tax rate and a two-year residency requirement to own a rec shop.

But Maine Gov. Paul LePage hasn’t expressed much enthusiasm about adult-use marijuana, and committee members are concerned he’ll veto or delay the implementation of the bill, according to the Portland Press Herald.

A final draft of the legislation is expected to be finished by Oct. 10.

Major provisions of the bill include:

  • A 10% excise tax

Michigan ups grow capacity for medical cannabis cultivators

Michigan regulators announced this week that medical marijuana cultivation license applicants will be allowed to apply for multiple permits at a single location, meaning that they could potentially grow many more plants than originally anticipated.

Under state law, growers can apply for three types of licenses. Class A license holders can grow up to 500 plants, Class B license holders up to 1,000 plants, and Class C up to 1,500 plants, according to Crain’s Detroit Business.

But the state’s Bureau of Medical Marihuana Regulation will allow growers to apply for “multiple” Class C licenses for
