By Bart Schaneman

Out-of-state medical cannabis companies are jumping into the nascent Ohio market because the state lacks a residency requirement for business owners.

While a majority of the applicants are listed as Ohio-based companies, at least a dozen either have an out-of-state business address or are connected to companies based elsewhere.

That’s according to the business information of 185 applications for 24 available cultivation licenses recently released by the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program.

A few of the better-known marijuana companies that have applied:

  • PharmaCann (Illinois company applying in Buckeye Lake village)

New acting Drug Enforcement Administration chief appointed

The U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday announced that the new acting administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration will be Robert W. Patterson, a career DEA official who started with the agency in 1988.

Patterson – the principal deputy administrator of the DEA since November 2016 – replaces outgoing DEA head Chuck Rosenberg, who tendered his resignation last week.

The DEA has been without a permanent director since Michele Leonhart left the job of administrator in 2015. After that, Rosenberg took on the job of “acting administrator” and wound up staying on until he announced his departure

Quebec to use government stores to sell recreational cannabis

Quebec plans to corner the recreational marijuana market by handing retail responsibilities to its government-owned liquor board, according to Radio-Canada, a move that would see private businesses barred from selling marijuana after it’s legalized next summer.

Canada’s second-largest province by population will follow in the footsteps of Ontario and New Brunswick in turning to a government-owned corporation.

Radio-Canada, a government-owned broadcaster, also said the legal age to buy recreational marijuana in Quebec will be 18, one year younger than neighboring Ontario and New Brunswick.

Quebec’s cannabis framework hasn’t been officially unveiled, but a forum of experts commissioned by the province

Medical marijuana company wants Florida to jump-start edibles sales

A medical marijuana company in Florida wants the state to speed up the process that would allow MMJ businesses to process and sell edibles.

Surterra Florida – which is based in Atlanta but possesses MMJ business licenses in Florida – is “demanding” that state regulators begin making rules for a new law that would implement the constitutional amendment voters approved in June, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Under the law, medical cannabis companies would be allowed to sell edibles as long as they don’t appeal to children, particularly their “shapes, forms and ingredients,” according to

By Bart Schaneman

Pennsylvania’s developing medical marijuana market appears to be progressing on schedule.

Many MMJ patients in New York still buying from black market

New York’s medical cannabis program has been hard-pressed to prove it’s a viable setup, and those issues apparently are continuing with prospective patients still relying on black-market MMJ.

A combination of high product costs, bureaucratic red tape and the easy availability of cannabis flower on the street has added up to an ongoing system where many patients turn to street dealers for medical marijuana flower as opposed to high-priced extract products available at New York dispensaries, the Staten Island Advance reported.

“Most people that go to a dispensary go once or twice and never go back,” Landon
