It’s About Race

As a native of Myrtle Beach, the lack of conversation and response in my community to the shooting of Julian Betton is disappointing. I’m glad MJINews is talking about it. But in the article “Crime & Punishment: The Story of Marijuana and Militarized Police,” I disagree with the author’s statement that, “The issues raised in both of these cases aren’t really about race.” Yes, white folks are shot by police. But even if we just focus on the number of deaths of black men at the hands of police since the events in Ferguson last year, we can easily see that this kind of policing disproportionately affects black folks. Christopher Faille is writing for a publication that focuses on the legal marijuana industry, but I do not believe that we can talk about drugs and policing in America without talking about race. Read Ta-Nehisi Coates’ “The Myth of Police Reform.” In fact, read anything by Ta-Nehisi Coates.
